High-quality, all-natural beef, pork, and chicken with no hormones, growth, stimulants or antibiotics and "down home friendly" service is what Caldwell's Crooked Creek Farm offers their customers.
Caldwell's Crooked Creek Farm is located at 1951 Haines Rd in Lapeer, and the Caldwells have been in the meat business for over 40 years.
"I grew up on a dairy farm and years later, I went into the meat business," Jim Caldwell said. "I went to work with Kroger and became a head meat cutter for them, and I just decided I wanted to go on my own."
After owning a couple of butcher shops and living on a farm, Caldwell and his wife decided to combine the two and set up shop on the farm.
"It's worked out wonderful for us. I love farming and raising those animals," Jim said. "This is our whole little world. It's our living, it's our fun, (and) it's our every thing."
The Caldwells offer meat products cut to their customer's specifications, as well as a personal experience with their butcher.
"We raise different breeds of cows. Some breeds produce leaner meat and some produce more marble meat, so we can customize to the person's wishes," his wife said. "We also stress to the customer that natural is better for health."
To ensure healthier meat, the Caldwells raise their own feed and have 24/7 access to either grass- or grain-fed cows. The meat is also cut fresh weekly.
"Everything is by pre-order with pickup hours being on Friday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM or Saturday between 8:00 AM to noon," Jim said. "Quarters and halves (of the animal) take approximately two to three weeks."
As for the future, Jim and his wife look to continue offering fresh-cut, customer-specific quality products that are not mass-produced and fostering personal one-on-one relationships.
"You know who and where it's coming from," Jim said. For more information,
